Accessability Statement

Alaska Trails is committed to making the Alaska Long Trail website accessible to people with disabilities. We believe everyone deserves equal access to information about Alaska's trails, public lands, and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Conformance Status

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities. We are actively working toward full conformance and consider this an ongoing effort.

Measures We Are Taking

Alaska Trails is working to improve accessibility by:

  • Providing descriptive alt text for photographs and trail maps

  • Using clear heading structure and consistent navigation across pages

  • Ensuring sufficient color contrast for text and interactive elements

  • Writing trail information in plain, readable language

  • Testing pages for keyboard navigability

  • Reviewing embedded third-party content (such as ArcGIS maps) for accessibility where possible

Known Limitations

We want to be upfront about areas where our site may not yet be fully accessible:

  • Interactive trail maps: Our embedded ArcGIS maps and trail segment visualizations may not be fully navigable by screen reader or keyboard alone. We are exploring more accessible alternatives and supplementary text descriptions.

  • Photographs and media: Some older images in our photo archive may lack complete alt text descriptions. We are adding these incrementally.

  • Third-party content: Some tools embedded on this site (such as mapping platforms and event listings) are managed by outside providers and may not fully meet accessibility standards. We will flag these where known.

  • Documents: Any downloadable PDFs (such as trail guides or planning documents) may not yet be fully tagged for screen reader use.

Technical Information

This website is built on Wix Studio and is designed to work with the following:

  • Modern web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge — current and one prior version)

  • Screen readers including NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver

  • Keyboard-only navigation

  • Browser zoom up to 200% without loss of content or functionality
